Ujian Setara 2

What moral values did you learn after reading the novel 'The Pearl' by John Steinbeck? Support Your answer with close reference to the text.

The novel 'The Pearl' by John Steinbeck is a tragic story of a fisherman named Kino, who found the great pearl which will bring an impact to his family's life. In this story, many moral values that are portrayed by the two main characters, Kino and Juana. There moral values have really set a move in my life.

One of the moral values that I have learned is to have ceaseless determination. Kino has always been a man who is determined in the things he does, For example, although many comments and bad judgement are made by the pearl buyers, Kino still holds on to the pearl and knows that it is worth more than what the pearl buyers have offered. Kino is offered by the main buyer to sell Kino's pearl to him for one thousand and five hundred pesos (page 51) but Kino refuses. He walks away with a stourt heart and is determined to sell the pearl in the capital. His actions cause the pearl buyers to realise that they have play too hard on him. Determination is also prove by Juana, Kino's wife. When Coyotito is stung by the scorpion, Juana immediately urges Kino to bring him to the doctor. Despite knowing their lower social standard, Juana still insists on getting baby Coyotito to the doctor. Because of Juana's determination, Kino decides to follow Juana's command. Through these actions, I believe that I must be strong in the decisions I make in my daily life.

Another lessons that I have learned is to be a devoted and loyal companion to my loved ones. Throughout the whole story, Juana has shown her faithfulness as a wife to Kino. She has always been supporting Kino no matter what the situations are. Sensing that the pearl is evil, Juana knows that she needs to destroy it before it destroys her family. This leads to her attempt to throw the pearl back into the sea without Kino's knowledge. However, her attempt proves futile and she is badly beaten by Kino. Kino punches her in the face and kicks her by the side. Instead if defending herself, she surrenders herself to Kino and dares no to fight back. She just stares at Kino wide unfrightened eyes, just like a sheep before the butcher. Furthermore, she realises that she will still be with Kino no matter how Kino treats her. She chooses to obey and listen to Kino. Through Juana's faithful character, I learnt that I need to be devoted to my spouse in the future.

Lastly, I have also learned to love and have compassion for my loved ones. Kino has always been protecting his family, Juana and Coyotito in the entire story. Even though Kino and his family are hunted, Kino is still not willing to let go of the pearl because he knows that it will make a difference in his family's life. When Kino and his family are running away from the trackers to the mountains, Kino is willing to risk his life to protect Juana and Coyotito. He asks Juana and Coyotitio to go and hide while he, himself will distract the trackers. In addition to that, Kino turns into a monster when he kills the trackers just to guard his family. For example, Kino kills the first tracker with his knife, he hits the head of the second trackers using the back of his riffle and shoots the third tracker between his eyes. I have truly learnt to be willing to sacrifice for my loved ones through Kino.

In a nutshell, I have learned to have ceaseless determination, to be a devoted and loyal companion to my spouse in the future and to always love and have compassion for my loved ones. All these life-lessons that I learnt are truly fruitful to my life.
